Essay - The Moon

No one knows how the Moon was formed but there is one dominant hypothesis which is referred to as the Giant Impact Theory. This theory states that the Moon was formed due to a massive collision.

According to this theory, the sun appeared about 4.6 billion years ago, and soon the proto-Earth was formed. At that time, there was another planet on the Earth orbital. The planet was called Theia.

About 50 million years later, Theia approached and collided with the Earth, and Theia was completely broken. After a while, the fragments gathered, and formed the Moon. Actually, the Moon was very close to the Earth, and gradually receded.

Although Theia had disappeared, there were still so many asteroids that the Earth was likely to be terribly damaged. However, the Earth would rarely get asteroid collisions because the Moon would get them. If it had not been for the Moon, the Earth might have an extreme climate.

2 billion years went by, and there were few asteroids around the 8 planets. Asteroids stopped colliding with the Moon, and the Moon got cold immediately. Getting cold, the Moon volcanoes stopped working because the magma congealed. Now that the Moon has little air, little water, very weak magnetic field and no volcano, the Moon looks like a dead object.

Many people might not consider how important the Moon is for life on earther. Actually, the Moon keeps the rotation of the Earth stable. Finally, since humans have dreamed of traveling to the Moon, the Moon seems to make humans a little crazy!
